Japanese Studies

Founded and developed along with the Vietnamese – Japanese diplomatic relationship, after years of striving, the Japanese Studies Department has contributed to the society a number of interpreters, translators, tour guides, lecturers of high qualifications.   


Goal of the training course     

Common goal
To train/educate Bachelor students of Japanese Studies who have backgrounds, skills, and professional style to meet socio-economic and integration requirements of the country.

Specific goal  
– To provide students with comprehensive background of the Japanese Language, Socio-culture, and Literature;
– To practice and develop the students’ Japanese proficiency in common and specific contexts;
– To guarantee graduate students to obtain professional, social knowledge, and relevant skills so as to effectively work as lecturers/teachers of Japanese, interpreters/translators, and others;
– To train students with effective study skills aiming to enhance self-learning the language; this will be useful for students to develop critical and research abilities on language aspects, or Japanese culture – civilization;
– To create a thorough link between areas of foreign languages and major-training in foreign languages at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, which prepares for students foundation background in pursuit of higher educations in different fields.

 

TRAININGSTRUCTURE:         
1.1. Post-graduate program: Master of Japanese Studies
1.2. Undergraduate program:
Core program: Bachelor of Japanese Studies (Interpreting-Translation)

 

Optional program:      
1) Japanese in Commerce
2) Japanese in Information Technology
3) Pedagogical methodology of Japanese delivery

 

LECTURERS
– The Department has almost 30 Vietnamese lecturers, many of whom are Japanese;
– All lecturers were educated in Japan, 90% hold Master degrees, 1 associate professor, 5 doctors and 5 fellows.

 

STUDENTS
– The Department has 685 full-time students and 180 working students;
– Many events are annually organized by the Department, such as:
+ Yosoko Show to welcome freshmen
+ Japanese Culture Week
+ Student Scientific Conference
+ Information Festival
+ Volunteer activities
– Students join some Japanese speaking contests such as Kitazawa Cup, Japanese Language Festival held by the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam;
– The Department also organizes the Japanese Club (J Club), Yosakoi Dancing Club, Volunteer Club, Golden Heart Week, Pray for Japan, etc.
– Students also achieve some prizes, such as 2nd and 3rd prizes for young scientific talents held by the Ministry of Education and Training, 1st prize for young scientific talents held by Hanoi University, 2nd prize for the Japanese Speaking Contest – Kitazawa Cup 2011, and others.

 

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS            
The Department has a close link with:
– More than 10 Japanese universities: Utsunomiya University, Osaka University, Osaka International University, Kanda University of International Studies, Nara Women’s University, Ochanomizu University, Kanazawa University, etc.
– Japanese Embassy to Vietnam, and the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam to organize:
+ Domestic and International Scientific Conference on Japanese teaching and research;
+ Cultural exchange activities such as introducing Furoshiki wrapping papers, Japanese drama training class, etc.
+ Japanese proficiency test held in annual December.
– And some volunteer organizations such as NPO, Minna Tomodachi, ICEA, etc.

 

EMPLOYMENT
– Almost 100% graduate students are employed within the first year of graduation
– Students can be at different positions, such as:
+ Interpreting-translation
+ Secretary/Assistant to a board of directors
+ Representatives of Japanese companies in Vietnam
+ Lecturers in universities, colleges, Japanese centers
+ Officers of NGOs, foreign affairs offices of Vietnam and Japan, etc.
