Hanoi University Works with The President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics and The President of the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia
On May 4, 2023, Hanoi University had an online meeting with Professor Azirah Hashim (the President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics) and Professor Elke Stracke (the President of the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia). On behalf of Hanoi University, President Nguyen Van Trao, along with representatives of the International Office and the English Department joined the meeting.
At the meeting, the representatives of Hanoi University shared and exchanged information on topics including the actual state of applied linguistics in Vietnam, the vision of Hanoi University in the context of applied linguistics, and the future and development orientation of applied linguistics in Vietnam and in the world.
Professor Azirah Hashim (the President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics) introduced some basic information about the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) and its branches and some potential cooperation forms. AILA (originally founded in 1964 in France) is an international federation of national and regional associations of Applied Linguistics. AILA has a membership of more than 8.000 individuals worldwide. The associations in Southeast Asia are in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
At the end of the meeting, the leaders of both sides agreed on establishing a branch of the Applied Linguistics Association in Vietnam and Hanoi University would be the focal point, progressing to joining the International Association of Applied Linguistics. At the same time, both the International Association of Applied Linguistics and The Applied Linguistics Association of Australia agreed with the suggestion of Hanoi University on cooperation and connection of scientists in the field of Applied linguistics in the region as well as the world.
